Arts, Culture, and Heritage in Daytona Beach

As you consider your move to Daytona Beach, you may be picturing yourself lounging on the sand all weekend long. While you can certainly do this, and likely often will, the beach is far from the only attractions and entertainment in the area. You may be surprised to discover the community has a thriving arts and cultural scene.

Historic Sites
While the first thing that comes to mind when you think of this area is the beach, there is much more to Daytona Beach.  The community boasts a rich history as well.

As a resident, you can spend some time exploring the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse, the state's tallest lighthouse. Built in 1887, the structure now features a nautical museum that outlines the history of the area.

Another historically important attraction is the Mary McLeod Bethune Home and Gravesite. Mary McLeod Bethune was a civil rights leader and the founder of Bethune Cookman University. Her former home is filled with artifacts and photographs from her life, and the grounds are quite scenic. Both of these attractions are listed as National Historic Landmarks.

Museums
The community has several important museums that are worth certainly exploring when you’re seeking out a bit of local culture. The Art League of Daytona Beach and the Museum of Florida Art are great destinations for the art lover in your life. Art lovers can see the work of regional artists at the Rose Room Gallery at Peabody Auditorium, which is open free of charge during the week.

The Museum of Arts and Sciences is the largest museum in the community. This museum has everything from art to a planetarium and even restored railroad cars. It is the only hands-on science center between Orlando and Jacksonville, the Charles and Linda Williams Children's Museum, a place where kids can use their hands to explore science.

Performing Arts
If looking at an art gallery is not your favorite way to enjoy cultural experiences, Daytona Beach offers a range of performing arts venues that will tickle your fancy. At the Cinematique Theater, you can enjoy both films and live theater in a full-time Art House Cinema location. The Ocean Center is a multi-purpose convention center that hosts big-name performances throughout the year from favorite touring groups. Should you wish to see a play or musical, head over to the Daytona Playhouse or the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center. This community even has a symphony, the Daytona Beach Symphony, which presents eight performances each year.

While sand and surf may be a central focus of your life in Daytona Beach, cultural experiences and artistic performances abound.
